Going Down Under Down Under

Played the $1,050 4:30pm game in the end. Ended up busting on a pot to probably go top 3 if not chip leader when i 3 bet allin KJstd preflop putting opponent on a resteal but it seems he had massive hands every time and my info was wrong this time. He showed QQ so i wasnt a massive dog but no help came. I probably played the game far too aggressive but the win only attitude was there and i was also a bit annoyed there were no antes in the tourney as there were plenty of rocks about.

Funny enough now ive written the paragraph above im a bit happier but ive been a moody **** for the hour since i bust. Its almost 9pm now on a Saturday night though and im totally against any kind of partying or such when ive bust something chunky like that. Back into negative for the trip as a whole now and its unlikely i will play much else before the main event.

Hi Rob, Damien here. Sorry to hear about your bad luck in the Poker Pro tourney. I am sure the main event will bring much better fortune! I am playing in the Super Satellite tomorrow at 12.30pm, one in ten will get a seat to the ME. Any advice on how to approach the satellite would be greatly appreciated! It will be the highest level I have played at, but seeing some of the players getting through in the lower satellites, I know there will be lots of donks. So I am wondering whether to play tight early and let them knock each other out or try to pick up some of the dead money by making some early moves and hopefully sail through with a decent stack when things get desperate. The structure is: starting bank 3000, level 1 blinds 25/50, 25 minute levels where the blinds basically double, so there will not that much time to accumulate chips. Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Will check your blog before I leave in the morning and/or might see you there. Thanks!

Yeh when i played it i went for the tight early option which worked for me. It does depend on the table you get but its easy to see fairly quick who is raising with only premium stuff, who is callin too much and who is raising a much wider range. I always look for resteals in these games which ideally if you dont get called mean you can accumulate lots chips without danger. A tight image helps for that as long as the person you are going over the top of is good enough to know that. Unless they changed it i think u get 4000 chips not 3000. If u do go deep try to make sure u stay at 7xbb or more if possible. The blinds jump much quicker later and i kept askin the directors what the next level was at the start of a new level to get an idea of how hard to push or when to gamble.

May see ya in there, i believe one of mates is playing one of the 2 sats today. Im prob gonna hav day off from live and i got pokernews party and another meal b4 from 888.com that ive blagged. GL

Hi Rob, you won't believe what happened - I managed to get to the final 25 (22 places earned a seat with the 23rd collecting $4,500). I had about the fifth shortest stack of all the remaining players, and decided I could probably just blind into the money. I made a massive blunder -- with 28,000 in chips, the blinds were 3000/6000. The two big stacks were sb and bb. The big stacks had (foolishly) been contesting pots, even against each other (what's the point when they are guaranteed a seat!?) I was dealt pocket aces in middle position, it was folded to me, and after some thought, I folded, believing I could cruise into the money, and not wanting one of the big stacks to defend their blinds and catch a freak card to knock me out. One of the smaller stacks pushed all in after I folded the aces and won the huge blinds uncontested, increasing his stack by half. One orbit later nobody had been knocked out, the blinds were up to 4000/8000, and I suddenly found myself with one of the shortest stacks, about 16000. I pushed all-in when it was folded to me on the button with a-7, running into JJ in the big blind, which held up to knock me out 2 from the cash. Absolutely sickening! I brought it on myself I guess, folding those aces - those blinds would have enabled me to survive another round when the tables were going hand for hand and there were several terminal stacks on the other 2 tables - and I could probably have knocked out the short stack if he put up a fight, thereby almost doubling up. Just gotta chalk it up to experience I guess. Will be one of my greatest regrets in poker though, haven't slept at all and never want to se another card! What do you think? Pretty dumb move on my part huh? Anyway, I will focus on improving my game and aiming for next year's event. Thanks for the advice, which definitely helped me get as far as I did. Can't wait to hear the next update and all about the main event. Good luck!

Right Damien lots of people wouldnt understand your fold and with hindsight u now giving yourself a hard time. This is what i read first b4 i starting thinking. (btw this aint me saying ul wp all that crap, this is my thought on the game at that point)

I stopped readng there and thought wow thats a good fold if u made it as techincally u r already in the seat and dont need to gamble yet. Hindsight is a great thing though and yeh mayb with the clock going up and the fact that maybe 1 set of blinds would put u back out of the seat it could well be a shove. It does depend how many x bb the shorter stacks had too as well as yorself at that point and how likely u would be called. Forget its AA u dont want a call from anyone here short or large stack if u push. Anyway to summarise if its online its easy to see how critical stacked people are but the decision to fold is so marginal either way its damn tough one to call. Its certianly not a bad play to allin or fold given the situation.

Obviously hindsight makes it gutting but there is also a huge element of luck at this stage. Obv i know u ran into jacks but mayb the A7 wasnt a shove here, it depends how likely it was to be called and how weak the other stacks still were. Sometimes when it gets incredibly close and the weak stacks r too weak (eg 2 x bb)its better to sit for the big blind (or a big hand if get one) then commit to any 2 cards and announce to the table theres no way u r folding your big blind so no one attacks it. Believe me ive been in your satellite position before and it is sick as can be but trust me the AA fold was not a bad move.

Anyway i hope u can put it down to experience and take the positives from it which at end of the day u were prob A7 vs JJ (30% mayb) to almost guarantee a seat. Dont forget i was happy with my 74off vs AQ bust twrds the seats the other day. Its a good sign to get so close even though it can mess with your head big time. Probably see ya in the card room soon again neway. Cheers for now , chin up .

BTW u also reminded me of one of my early sick moments in December 2005, this is extract from one of first posts i did on this blog:

The rest of december was uneventful apart from narrowly missing out on a seat to the Party Poker Million Cruise in Mar 2006. Again through sub qualifying for $30 i got to a multi of $250 with 850 runners and 16 packages up for grabs, spare cash to 17,18 and 19th as well.

I finished 23rd , i know how to play these multis and its all about getting your chips in the pot first then u shouldnt be called at the late stage unless u r badly beaten. Unfortunately a stack that had me just covered decided to call my all in on a raised pot flop 754 board, we both were in about 13,14/23 left at the time so huge risks were not necessary. He raised me on the flop and i moved all in with JJ ....instant fold for other guy as he still has more than enough chips to probably make the seat. But no he calls me with 76off and spikes a 6 on the river for 2 pair, i couldnt believe the foolish call as we were both almost safe and to even call the raise preflop was bad enough. Anyway that pot would definitely 99% of guaranteed me the seat but it just wasnt to be, move on and take it on the chin.
